CAA Arts Access: Reflections of Beauty | Screening and Q&A with PUBLIQuartet

DescriptionJoin us for a special screening of the World Premiere of PUBLIQuartet's MIND THE GAP: “Reflections on Beauty”, an original performance concept that celebrates the life and legacy of Madam C. J. Walker, the first female African-American self-made millionaire in America. A Q&A will follow the screening with members of PUBLIQuartet, including Hamilton Berry '07CC, who is a member of this Grammy-nominated string quartet.

PUBLIQuartet worked directly in collaboration with Madam Walker’s great-great-granddaughter, A’Lelia Bundles '76JRN, to create a unique and unforgettable performance experience through a convergence of music, poetry, and literature. In honor of the 2019 centennial anniversary of Madam Walker's death, this work chronicled her life from her origins as an uneducated washer-woman in St. Louis, to her final residence in Harlem. Madam Walker’s legacy as a massively successful hair-care business owner, philanthropist, social activist, and educator has had both deep roots and lasting influence in Harlem and in African-American communities.

Applauded by The Washington Post as “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music,” and by The New Yorker as “independent-minded,” PUBLIQuartet’s modern interpretation of chamber music makes them one of the most dynamic artists of their generation. Dedicated to presenting new works for string quartet, PUBLIQuartet rose on the music scene as winner of the 2013 Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places award, and in 2019 garnered Chamber Music America’s prestigious Visionary Award for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical, jazz, and world chamber music.
